Fans of The Walking Dead will be happy to hear that Tom Payne will soon be back on their screens every week! Payne joined Fox’s upcoming drama pilot Prodigal Son from Greg Berlanti (Arrow) earlier this year after a recasting and now the network has officially picked it up to series, according to TVLine. He can celebrate the news alongside fellow Walking Dead alum Sarah Wayne Callies, whose pilot Council of Dads was just picked up to series on NBC.
Prodigal Son will follow “Malcolm Bright (Payne), the son of a notorious serial killer called The Surgeon who understands how killers think. The criminal psychologist uses his skills to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers while balancing his manipulative mother, annoyingly normal sister, and a homicidal father still looking to bond with his prodigal son.” Good Omens star Michael Sheen will be playing Malcolm’s father and Bellamy Young will be playing his mother. Lou Diamond Phillips, Aurora Perrineau, and Frank Harts have all been cast to star in the pilot as well.
Originally Iron Fist star Finn Jones was set to star as Malcolm Bright, but after the first table read the network chose to go in a different direction. It will be written by Legends of Tomorrow’s Chris Fedak and Deception’s Sam Sklaver. Berlanti will executive produce under his Berlanti Productions banner alongside Fedak, Sklaver, and Sarah Schechter. The project is the first partnership between Berlanti and Fox, adding another series to the prolific producers impressive 15 scripted series on the air. Berlanti’s forthcoming two new series at The CW were also picked up for full seasons as well!
Most recently, Payne appeared on AMC’s popular zombie drama, The Walking Dead. He played the role of Paul “Jesus” Rovia throughout seasons 6-9. Other credits include IO, Mindgamers, and a music career alongside his fiancee, Jennifer Akerman, and their band Final Child.
