‘American Horror Story’ Reveals Theme for Season 9

Recently, we reported on the lack of Evan Peter’s presence in the upcoming season of American Horror Story. While I am still attempting to process the news, I found myself overjoyed upon discovering the upcoming theme for season nine of the hit anthology series. Priding myself on knowing Scream like the back of my hand, I can also say the same about most 80s slasher films. A sub-genre of horror movies that have become my absolute favorite of the year. The slasher film always provides us with a strong female lead and keeps us wanting to come back for more.

Ryan Murphy tends to create powerful female leads throughout his various shows over the years, but this upcoming season of American Horror Story stands to produce many. The first teaser for season nine, as seen below, focuses on a young female running throughout the woods and chased by a killer. A killer that appears to move at a snail’s pace but always manages to get their victim. In many ways, the forest setting definitely gives off a Friday the 13th vibe and makes me wonder if the entire season will take place at a summer camp.

There’s so many classic slasher films that this upcoming season could draw upon within that setting too. Sleepaway Camp comes to mine as well as the multitude of Friday the 13th sequels. However, if they wanted to have a decent blending of brilliant 80s horror films Murphy will discover there’s no shortage of classics. Some of the films Murphy should pay homage include: A Nightmare on Elm Street, My Bloody Valentine, Happy Birthday to Me, April Fool’s Day, Maniac, and Prom Night. While many exist and slasher films throughout the years should not become neglected within this upcoming season of the show.

After all, a series involving slashers should include a reference or two to I Know What You Did Last Summer. Urban Legend could lend itself quite nicely to this anthology as well. Each episode could focus on stories that the characters have only heard about over time but felt were over exaggerated. Nor should the season neglect Halloween or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The truth is that a season focused primarily on slasher films is absolutely limitless. This could quite possibly be the most intense seasons of AHS yet. This could also be an excellent way to bring Twisty back into the mix.

Alongside the many films Murphy can pay homage to many characters should have some respect tossed their way too. I’m hoping for a Nancy Thompson or Alice character. I also like the idea of these two characters becoming best friends and potentially taking down the villain at the end is appealing. A boy obsessed with his mother is also appealing. Maybe she could own the summer camp and they find her at the end of the series dead. A shrine in her honor and the sweet boy is a cover up for his split personality is the killer who stalks girls in the woods.

My mind has run rampant with ideas since the announcement from Ryan Murphy’s Instagram. Most of the above is mere speculation, but I imagine that all horror fans mind’s went wild with the possibilities for this upcoming season. What we do know for sure is that some killer music and a killer wardrobe will grace our screens come fall. Without further adieu, the official first teaser of AHS: 1984.
