Brewery Ommegang Celebrates the ‘Game of Thrones’ Final Season With New ‘For the Throne’ Beer

The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones is almost here, and to celebrate Brewery Ommegang and HBO have teamed up, yet again, to bring fans and beer lovers everywhere another delicious, series-inspired specialty brew.

The newest beer in their partnership is called For The Throne, and you probably guessed it, it’s inspired by the cutthroat race to rule over Westeros. Jeff Peters, Vice President of Licensing and Retail at HBO, described the course of action and inspiration for the new beer. He said:

[row]“In the course of planning out the next beer in our amazing collaborative partnership with Brewery Ommegang we asked the brewers ‘What would Ommegang do for the throne?’ Their answer was to brew this exciting and innovative co-fermented beer so that our fans can raise a toast to the culmination of their beloved series this spring. Every bottle, every pour, every toast, every sip… For The Throne!” [/row]

Brewery Ommegang president Doug Campbell says this beer is beyond special. It bends the rules of beer-making to produce something truly unique. He said:

[row]“Winter is here, the wall has fallen, and the final battle for Westeros is underway. With this offering, we have bent the traditional boundaries of beer-making, co-fermenting traditional ingredients with juices normally destined for fine wines, going to great lengths to create a truly unique, special beer. This style of beer often called an ‘oenobeer,’ is a rapidly expanding area of study for us. For The Throne is our first of co-fermentation beer of 2019 and the only one we’ve launched under the Game of Thrones banner.”[/row]

The brew itself is golden copper in color with a fluffy white head on top. It’s described as delicate and yet complex and sits at an impressive 9.5% ABV. As mentioned by Campbell, the brew is a mixture of strong golden ale mixed with pinot grigio and viognier grape juices which is then conditioned with Champagne yeast. Once poured, the beer smells of honeysuckle and toasted grain, and you may also notice notes of pear and apricot as well.
