As contract negotiations began to close earlier this week, it became more and more clear that a second season was in the cards for ABC’s family comedy sitcom The Conners. On Friday, the network made it official with an announcement that the show would be returning for season two.

ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke said in a statement, “We are proud to be continuing the story of the iconic Conners family. This team is fearless in their willingness to tackle contemporary issues with humor and heart, and I have no doubt they will continue to outdo themselves.”

At this time, the confirmed cast members for season 2 include John Goodman (Dan), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Lecy Goranson (Becky), and Ames McNamara (Mark, Darlene’s son). Absent from that list is Michael Fishman, who played DJ on the original series and the new revival season and The Conners spinoff. At this time, he is expected to appear in some episodes throughout the second season.

The Conners premiered last October and earned solid ratings on its first episode. While no one expected the series to pull off the rating records that the revival season produced, the show still managed to match the revival’s finale numbers. Additionally, The Conners premiered as TV’s number 1 series to debut this season, TV’s most-watched series debut since The Good Doctor last September and the ABC’s most-watched comedy debut in 4 years. All in all, not a bad start for the Conners clan.

The first season hosted some impressive guest stars which helped draw in viewers including Katy Sagal, Juliette Lewis, Justin Long, Matthew Broderick, as well as series vets Johnny Galecki, Sandra Bernhard, and Estelle Parsons to name a few.

The Conners picks up with the iconic TV family after the loss of their matriarch. The synopsis for the series says, “after a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before. This iconic family – Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky, and D.J. – grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns – with love, humor, and perseverance, the family prevails.”

There’s no word yet on if the series will be retaining its season one timeslot.
