‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ Is Getting A Sequel

Even as a Transformers fan, this confused me, so bare with me while I simultaneously wrap my head around what is going on and explain it to you guys in the best way possible.

The Transformers producer, Lorenzo Di Bonaventura has confirmed that a sequel to The Last Knight, which was released in 2017, is currently in the works, along with another project.

Bonaventura said:

“One is the latest in the main family series following the events of Transformers: The Last Knight and the other is a sequel to Bumblebee.”

Considering that The Last Knight was the lowest grossing film of the Tranformers series and that Bumblebee acted as a reboot, I’m surprised to hear that they’re continuing with The Last Knight story, which ended with the Autobots returning to Cybertron (which was destroyed in Dark of the Moon) and the threat of Unicron (which is apparently Earth) somewhat looming.

This news raises many questions. Are the Transformer films connected to Bumblebee and its sequel? While it received a lot of praise, Bumblebee actually seemed more like a hard reboot than a soft one, a lot was changed- including the timing of Optimus Prime’s arrival on Earth which seemingly erases many of the events from the 5 movies. Not only that, but we now have 2 different versions of Optimus Prime. The Bay-version and the more G1 version in Bumblebee.

I could go on and on but it seems that we may have 2 different Transformer timelines. Especially since Bumblebee seems to confirm that Transformers have not visited Earth before, which contradicts the knowledge established in, pretty much, every single Bay film. From what has been discussed, the Optimus Prime spin off seems to have been abandoned and replaced with a Bumblebee sequel that focuses on Optimus Prime and Bumblebee… and maybe the other Autobots that arrived at the end.

It’s incredibly difficult to determine what is happening with the Transformers franchise. With the financial failure of the 5th installment, Bumblebee seemed like a clean-slate. While it did not do that amazingly at the box office, it did do great with the critics so going back to the story from The Last Knight seems like a questionable decision. Not only did The Last Knight highlight the fatigue that plagued the Transformers, but it was also filled with many inconsistencies that seem to have been erased thanks to the reboot.

So the important question now is… is there any point going back?

With a new timeline created that received more positive reviews in comparison to the previous films, revisiting the Bay-verse may complicate things further.

What do you think? Should The Last Knight get a sequel, or should they focus on the new timeline?
