Marvel’s ‘What If’ Comic Series Coming to Disney+

From the 1970’s through the 1990’s, Marvel Comics published What If…?, a regular, monthly series that allowed creators to ask burning questions like What if Spider-Man Had Joined the Fantastic Four or What if Rick Jones Had Become The Hulk, or What if Phoenix Had Lived?  The series was revived, after a fashion, the 2000’s as a series of one-shot issues and mini-series covering alternative occurrences in the Marvel Universe proper, focused on big-scale crossovers like Secret Invasion and House of M.  The latest iteration of What If…? came in October of 2018, again as a series of one-shot issues.

Now, with the advent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, new fans will get a chance to see what major events could have been like.  Disney is planning an animated What If…? series for it’s forthcoming Disney+ streaming service.  The series is being overseen by Marvel Studio’s puppeteer Kevin Feige directly.

One of the episodes being considered is What if Loki Had Found the Hammer of Thor, an adaptation of What If…? vol 1, issue 45.  The episode would feature an animated version of Loki, as played by Tom Hiddleston, though it’s not confirmed if the MCU actors will be reprising their voice roles for the series, although that is the hope of the producers.

Just imagine an episode called What if Thor Had Gone for the Head.

What if…? joins other recently announced, live action offerings set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe like the Tom Hiddleston-led Loki series, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the Vision and the Scarlet  series.

It’s been extremely additive to the entire creative arc, not just of the Disney+ programs we’re working on, but on the entire post-Endgame MCU.

There is no release dates for this or any of the other series slated for Disney+, but the streaming service is expected to launch later this year.
