Marvel adds Danai Gurira to ‘Avengers: Endgame’ poster

It’s been a busy day over at Marvel HQ. Rumours that Captain Marvel is about to hit $1 billion are rife, and they just happened to drop a new Avengers: Endgame trailer, which maybe broke the internet a little bit. But amongst the positive, there has been a slight backlash against the film studio.

Alongside the new trailer, the studio released a stunning poster for the upcoming film, featuring what was left of the Avengers team, old and new. At first look, its a beautiful piece of art, showcasing characters from all their major films over the last 10 years. There were some really positive, and also funny reviews of the poster, but one major criticism. 14 characters were showcased on the poster yet only 13 billed.

Black Panther star Danai Gurira is seen on the right hand side of the poster. She’s one of the only stars from the 2018 hit to have survived Thanos’ snap, and appears to play a vital role in Endgame. So why would her name not get top billing? Poster billing is a complicated process, discussed excellently by Kyle Buchanan last year in an article for Variety after the first Infinity War poster was released.

So what went wrong this time? It’s most likely a very simple error. Gurira is a secondary character in a Marvel franchise that so far has only had one outing. The other characters featured in the poster all have multiple Marvel outings under their belt, as well as other film and TV properties making them well known names. It is likely Gurira’s team assumed she wouldn’t be considered for a top billing, so they didn’t push for it. But then we arrive to today, where we see a poster for potentially the biggest film of the year, where 13 out of 14 stars on the poster get a top billing. Which star didn’t? A female person of color. From Marvel’s first Oscar nominated film. It’s understandable that this would cause concern to many of Marvel’s fans, but luckily, they’ve taken on board the criticism and this evening released a brand new, brand new poster, with Gurira rightfully billed amongst her contemporaries.

Gurira was one of the highlights of last year’s Black Panther, showcasing just the start of strong, powerful women in the MCU, so it’s a delight that she is finally up top, where she should have always been.

(Eagle eyes may have also spotted Gwyneth Paltrow and Jon Favreau also listed in the block text. Good to see our Marvel OG crew survive the snap too.)
