Thanks to ‘The Greatest Showman’ Hugh Jackman is Now an Oscar Away from an EGOT

Despite coming out in December 2017, The Greatest Showman is still making spectacular waves and no one is happier about it than Hugh Jackman. The film, which featured a record-breaking original soundtrack, won the Grammy Award last night for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Medium, putting Hugh Jackman just one prestigious award away from the coveted EGOT. The actor celebrated the film’s win on Twitter.

An EGOT winner is the title given to someone who throughout their career wins an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. As of now, there are 15 EGOT winners including Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend, and Andrew Lloyd Weber. With his recent Grammy win, Jackman joins a stacked group of individuals who only need an Oscar to earn the highly-prized title including Lin Manuel Miranda, Ben Platt, James Earl Jones, Lily Tomlin, Cynthia Nixon, and Dick Van Dyke.

Jackman won the Emmy Award in 2005 for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program thanks to his brilliant hosting of the 58th Annual Tony Awards. Just a year prior, he walked away with the Tony Award for his role as Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz. For some time this year, Jackman was considered a contender for the Best Actor category at the Oscars for his role in The Front Runner, but ultimately fell a bit short when it came time for nominations.

The Greatest Showman, which was released in theaters at Christmas 2017, was inspired by the story of P. T. Barnum’s creation of the Barnum & Bailey Circus and the lives of its star attractions. It starred Jackman as Barnum, Michelle Williams as his wife, and Zac Efron as his business partner Phillip Carlyle. Zendaya also starred in the film as Anne Wheeler, an acrobat, trapeze artist in the show and Keala Settle took on the role of the Bearded Lady.

It ended up bringing in over  $434 million worldwide and has become the third highest grossing musical in North America and globally. It received Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor – Musical or Comedy for Jackman and took home the award for Best Original Song for its powerful anthem “This Is Me”. The song was also nominated for Best Original Song at last year’s Academy Awards but unfortunately did not take the win.

Congrats to Jackman and the entire Greatest Showman team on their Grammy win and be sure to keep an eye out for some more serious roles on the horizon for Jackman!
