Oreo The Raccoon: The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Model Has Passed Away

Oreo the raccoon, the real-life model for Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy, has passed away at aged 10.

The news was confirmed by Quinta Layla, the group that cared and trained Oreo, on Facebook.

“We have only the saddest news today.
Our hearts are broken as we have lost our best friend, our Guardian of our Galaxy Mr Oreo Raccoon.
Oreo passed away in the early hours of this morning after a very short illness. Many thanks to our wonderful vets for their compassion and care.
Oreo you made so many people’s lives happy. You have been an amazing ambassador for raccoons everywhere.”

Rocket is of course voiced by Bradley Cooper and Sean Gunn provides most of the motion capture performance for the character, but Oreo actually inspired many of the characteristics displayed by Rocket in his various appearances. Oreo even attended the world premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy and became one of the most famous trash pandas in the galaxy.

Rocket first appeared in 1976 and was actually names after The Beatles song Rocky Raccoon.

Tributes from all around the world have appeared online. Join in as we all celebrate the life of a very special Raccoon that helped bring a very lovable character to life.

Rest in peace, Sweet Rabbit.
