“Titanfall” Developer Reveals ‘Apex Legends’, A Free-To-Play Battle Royale Spinoff, Available Now

There have been rumors for a little bit on what Respawn has been working on.  There have been reports on what it was, most recently from KotakuNow we have the full details.

Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn Entertainment, announced the reveal on Twitter-

The tweet reads-

Looks like everything is unlocked now? Fun.

So, if you like Respawn, our games or even me, you should tune in tomorrow. Our stream starts at 8am pt and we’ll tell you everything about Apex Legends. Everything.

So, just what is Apex Legends? Well, it is an incredible cross between Titanfall, Overwatch, and Blackout mode from Call Of Duty Black Ops 4. It is set in the Titanfall universe, but thirty years into the future, and without mechs. There is a cap of 60 players per match, but instead of solo the game is squad focused. You run 20 teams of three and as with any battle royale mode, the last team standing wins.

Here is where their idea distances itself from other battle royale modes like Fortnite and Player Unknowns Battlegrounds. It adds eight specialist/legends characters  you pick from at the start. Each of these has specific abilities that can help you and your squad make it through, just like Overwatch’s character dynamic of countering. For example, Mirage has a decoy ability to produce a holographic double of himself, tricking enemies so he or his teammates can get better positioning on them, and Wraith can open rifts to help her squad and avoid damage.

All this makes for a very intriguing and unique take on battle royale, and the best part is you can download it for free right now! According to Respawn they will be supporting the game, whether new legends, maps or changes, and they will offer seasons of content. My guess is, keep on the lookout for some sort of battlepass to purchase for cosmetics like skins.

The only bad thing we have heard out of the deal is that Respawn is not working on Titanfall 3 at the moment. There had been many rumors that Apex Legends was another team, or that Titanfall 3 was delayed and this was something to tide us over, but this is in fact what they have been working on. Hopefully at some point we will get a 3, as the series is incredible.

Apex Legends is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
