‘Aquaman’ Eyes $1 Billion Box Office, Now the Highest Grossing DCEU Film
Aquaman continued to reign supreme at the box office over the weekend, and in doing so surpassed a major milestone in DC film history.
As of Sunday night, the film had crossed the $940 million mark placing it well ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice which earned $873.6 million globally. Aquaman now sits on top of the DCEU earners list as the highest grossing DC film.
The next milestone in sight for the film is reaching the $1 billion mark which it very well may accomplish by this weekend. If (or when) Aquaman crosses the $1 billion mark, it has the potential to also pass The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises to become the biggest DC film ever. Next weekend, however, Aquaman should have some hefty competition when M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass opens on Friday, the 18th.
Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry (aka. Aquaman, half-human, half-Atlantean and King of the Seven Seas, ruler of Atlantis). The film also stars Amber Heard (as Mera), Patrick Wilson (as the villainous Orm/Ocean Master), Temuera Morrison (as Tom Curry), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (as Black Manta), Nicole Kidman (as Queen Atlanna), Dolph Lundgren (as King Nereus) and Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe (as Nuidis Vulko).
James Wan directs with Peter Safran producing along with Zack and Deborah Snyder, Rob Cowan, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.
The official film synopsis reads as follows:
