Watch the First Trailer for the James Gunn-Produced ‘BrightBurn’

What if Superman’s origin story went a little differently? What if instead of turning out to be a hero, things took a dark and sinister turn? That’s basically the plot of James Gunn’s first project post his controversy with Marvel, and we are loving it!

The first trailer for Brightburn, a film produced by Gunn, dropped over the weekend, and it’s certainly captured our interest. Fron director David Yarovesky, Brightburn stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones, and Meredith Hagner.

The trailer tees up the story of an alien child sent to earth and raised by a rural, loving family. As the child grows, he begins to learn he has special powers which he can’t control. Sounds kind of Superman-ish, right? Things take a turn, however, when the child begins using those powers to do evil and horrible things.

In the below first trailer, the look and feel of the film are that of the classic horror genre, complete with one or two good jump scares! Check out the first look at Brightburn below.

The official synopsis for the film is below:

[row]“What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?

With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.”[/row]

The film was written by Mark and Brian Gunn. The film is produced by James Gunn and Kenneth Huang with Mark and Brian Gunn, Dan Clifton, Simon Hatt and Nic Crawley serving as executive producers.

Back in July of this year, Disney announced it severed ties with Gunn after a series of offensive tweets were uncovered from his past social media history. Best known for his films Slither and The Guardians of the Galaxy, this is the disgraced filmmaker’s first project since his firing from Disney and Marvel.

Brightburn hits theaters Memorial Day weekend, May 24, 2019.
