‘This Is Us’ Star Chrissy Metz Shines in the Emotional First Trailer for ‘Breakthrough’

This Is Us star Chrissy Metz is making us feel all of the feelings once more, only this time, it will be on the big screen.

Metz is taking on her first feature film role to tell the incredible true story of Joyce Smith, a woman whose 14-year-old son fell through the ice of a frozen lake in Missouri.  Her son John was proclaimed lifeless for over an hour, but Joyce never gave up hope.  Through prayer and faith, she stayed by her son’s side until miraculously, his heart began beating again.  The film is an adaptation based on Smith’s novel The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection, which tells the events that occurred that day.

The first trailer for the film was released on Wednesday, and this looks like a 4-tissue box tearjerker of a film. Check out the first trailer below.

The official film synopsis reads as follows: “Breakthrough is based on the inspirational true story of one mother’s unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds. When Joyce Smith’s adopted son John falls through an icy Missouri lake, all hope seems lost. But as John lies lifeless, Joyce refuses to give up. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John’s recovery, even in the face of every case history and scientific prediction. From producer DeVon Franklin (Miracles from Heaven) and adapted for the screen by Grant Nieporte (Seven Pounds) from Joyce Smith’s own book, Breakthrough is an enthralling reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle.”

In addition to Metz, the film also stars Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Mike Colter, Marcel Ruiz, Sam Trammell, and Dennis Haysbert

Roxann Dawson (The Americans) is set to direct with the script being penned by Grant Nieporte (Seven Pounds) and produced by DeVon Franklin (Miracles From Heaven).

The film will be released in theaters Easter 2019.
