‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ Canceled on Netflix
It appears as if Netflix and Marvel are cleaning house when it comes to their streaming content. Just one week after announcing the cancellation of Marvel’s Iron Fist on the streaming service, another popular Marvel series, Luke Cage, has surprisingly gotten the ax.
Late on Friday, Deadline broke the news that the series is not returning to the streaming service. A joint statement from Netflix and Marvel read:
[row]”Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”[/row]
Deadline also reports that the Luke Cage writers had already been working on season 3 scripts for quite some time as the series had a formal season 3 order consideration on the table. After possible creative differences and Netflix reportedly being unimpressed with the drafted season 3 scripts, the writer’s room had been put on hold. The creative differences all came to a head this week which reportedly led to the series cancelation.
Season 2 of the series debuted on Netflix this past summer. The series stars Mike Colter as the titular Harlem hero along with Simone Missick, Rosario Dawson, Theo Rossi, Alfre Woodard, Mustafa Shakir, Gabrielle Dennis, and Annabella Sciorra.
Luke Cage is the second Marvel series ever to receive a cancelation on Netflix. Last week, Marvel and Netflix announced that Iron Fist would also not be returning for a new season. The statements announcing both Luke Cage and Iron Fist‘s cancelations are strikingly similar, however, there is a strong sense of finality which comes with the Luke Cage statement shown above. When Marvel and Netflix announced news of Iron Fist‘s cancelation, the statement was left open-ended, to an extent, with the possibility for the show’s characters to still appear throughout the other Marvel shows. The last sentence of their statement announcing Iron Fist‘s cancelation read, “While the series on Netflix has ended, the Immortal Iron Fist will live on.”

At this time, it’s unclear if one or both of these series might be moving to Disney’s new streaming service which is expected to launch in 2019 or if Luke Cage characters will appear in other Marvel shows, like Iron Fist.
