Re-living ‘Planet of The Apes’ on its 17th Birthday

On this day, 17 years ago, Planet Of The Apes hit the theaters for the first time in the US. The one and only Tim Burton directed the movie, and William Broyles Jr., Lawrence Konner, and Mark Rosenthal wrote the screenplay for the film. The film was adapted from the Planet Of The Apes novel, written by the French novelist Pierre Boulle in 1963.

You probably already saw it, Tim Burton was the director of the sixth Planet Of The Apes film, and his movies are known to have an incredible cast. We have Mark Wahlberg portraying the role of Captain Leo Davidson, Tim Roth as Thade, and Helena Bonham Carter as Ari.

It’s pretty hard to believe that Tim Burton made this movie, but somewhere you see his creative stamp in the film he directed. Like the costumes, and the dramatic twists in this movie. It’s the same thing as he did for Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children that came out in 2016. There is always something that screams ‘Burton‘ in his movies, whether it’s the costumes or how the scenes move together.

For people that don’t know what this movie is about, it tells the story of how Captain Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) lands on a planet that is ruled by intelligent apes. Of course, the humans were slaves of the ruling apes, but with the help of Ari (Helena Bonham Carter), the humans and apes demanding equal rights, start a rebellion.

Fun facts:

Mark Wahlberg met Tim Burton for only 5 minutes before he decided to join the movie. He was thrilled to work with Tim Burton, and he would have portrayed any part Burton asked him to. It led to Wahlberg dropping out of Ocean’s Eleven (2001).

Michael Clarke Duncan at one point sprained his ankle on set, and he was taken to the hospital in full gorilla makeup.

Tim Roth let his role as Severus Snape go in 2001’s first Harry Potter film the Sorcerer’s Stone to portray Thade in this movie. Can you imagine Tim Roth as Severus Snape?
