Matt Smith to Join ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’
If you were sad to see the original cast of The Crown pulled away and replaced with an older generation, taking Matt Smith with it-fear not! Matt Smith, known for his roles in Doctor Who and The Crown, will now be jumping over to one of the biggest franchises-one that takes place in a galaxy far, far away.
Variety reported Tuesday that Smith will be joining the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX, the final film in the latest trilogy by the Lucasfilm franchise. He joins Billy Dee Williams, Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels and Adam Driver. Some more new faces we’ll see in the film include Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, and Naomi Ackie.
No details were revealed about who Smith will be playing, or what side he’ll be on. We’ve seen his playful devious side in his role as Prince Philip in the first two seasons of The Crown, so he could fit in well on the dark side.
He was nominated for an Emmy this year for that portrayal. He can also be seen as Mapplethorpe in a Tribeca Film Festival project about the life of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
Lucasfilm released Solo this year, the backstory to its most beloved space cowboy, Han Solo.
All we know is that we hope Smith gets a lot of screen time!
Star Wars: Episode IX is due out on December 20th, 2019.
