‘Parks and Recreation’ Star Ben Schwartz to Voice Sonic the Hedgehog in Upcoming Movie

Paramount Pictures has found it’s Sonic the Hedgehog!

The studio has announced that actor and comedian Ben Schwartz will be voicing the titular character in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film. The news was first reported by Variety on Wednesday with Schwartz sharing the article on his Twitter page. He wrote, “I. LOVE. 90s. BLUE. ICONIC. CHARACTERS. I am beyond excited about this movie. It’s gonna be amazing. I have been training by running, wagging my finger and impatiently tapping my foot. GOTTA GO FAST!”

Arguably best known for his roles as Jean-Ralphio Sapraicone on Parks and Recreation and for his role as Clyde Oberholdt on House of Lies, Schwartz also has tons of voice acting credits on his resume. His most recent voice acting roles include Dewey on Disney’s Ducktales and Leonardo in the upcoming Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Schwartz joins an already stellar cast which includes James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey.

While the explicit details relating to the plot are not yet known, the film is said to follow the titular character, as well as his friends, Tails and Knuckles, as they try to foil the evil Dr. Eggman Robotnik’s plans for world domination. The Sonic the Hedgehog film will be a mixture of live-action with CGI graphics based on the 1991 hit Sega video game.

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most iconic and recognizable video game characters that has ever existed. Since its Sega debut in the 1990s, there have been many different version of the game released including a mobile version. The Sonic the Hedgehog series has surpassed 80 million physical copies sold and over 350 million additional units issued via software and mobile downloads. In addition to being a video game icon, Sonic has also been the subject of five television series over the course of the years.

The film will be directed by Jeff Fowler. Neal Moritz, Mie Onishi, and Tim Miller have signed on as producers and the script is written by Josh Miller.

Sonic the Hedgehog the movie is slated for release on November 15, 2019
