The Russo Brothers to Helm “A Massive, Global TV” Project at Amazon

The men behind Avengers: Infinity War, “the most ambitious crossover event in history”, are taking that mentality to Amazon Studios. During Amazon’s Television Critics Association’s summer press tour panel, the streamer announced that The Russo Brothers had signed on to create a “large-scope, multi-layered international event series” based on an “ambitious concept”.

According to DeadlineAmazon described the event as  “a groundbreaking global TV franchise” where “the Russo Brothers will have the creative freedom to oversee an ambitious concept meant to … redefine the boundaries of storytelling.” While Amazon failed to provide any specific details they did use a variety of high-concept buzzwords to reveal that the “series will function as a fire-starter to ignite the creation of multiple original local-language and local production series. All of the local series are meant to enhance the entire entertainment experience and will be available for the viewer to deep dive into an imagined layered world.”

Amazon was tasked with finding their own Game of Thrones by CEO Jeff Bezos, meaning a genre series that would connect viewers globally and The Russo brothers seem like the perfect duo create this kind of world. During a pre-taped video shown at the panel they promised that they would be “sourcing talent from all around the world.”

[row]”The Russo Brothers have impacted the pop culture barometer of creative excellence with their vision for both Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War. They brought a level of scale and execution to those films that has raised the bar for audiences everywhere and we can’t wait for them to do the same for us on this project for our Amazon Prime Customer. We are thrilled to be working with Joe and Anthony Russo and their AGBO Studios as they build this incredible, multifaceted, international franchise,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said.[/row]

The Russo’s led Avengers: Infinity War on a record-breaking journey at the Box Office and in cinematic history. Not only were they able to bring together all the Marvel superheroes from the past decade together for a well-received installment (and a not so well-received cliffhanger), but the film quickly became the highest grossing superhero movie of all time. With their AGBO production company, the duo has also had a hand in Netflix’s The Warriors, SyFy’s Deadly Class, and Mastermind at FX.

What do you think about the mystery project? Do you think the Russo’s can bring a Game of Thrones type series to television?
