Did You Catch The Batman Easter Egg in ‘Rick and Morty”s Pickle Rick Episode?
The ‘Pickle Rick’ episode of Rick and Morty has become quite popular since it first aired in August of 2017. Creator Dan Harmon has revealed that the episode was in part, inspired by Breaking Bad episode 4 Days Out.’ Now, we know that it was also inspired by Batman.
There was a reference to the one and only Batman in it which some are just noticing.
In this episode, Rick transforms himself in to a supposedly helpless pickle. He goes on a rage rampage while he deals with his family problems. It was this episode that got Rick and Morty its first Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Animated Program.
A Reddit user Capgunkid, noticed the clever tribute to a 1998 episode of Batman: The New Animated Adventures. In the post credits scene, a Joker-esque villain appears to tie Rick and Morty to a piano. He then prepares for his performance which he calls his greatest of all time. Soon after, Danny Trejo’s jaguar swoops in to save the day, which distracted fans from initially recognizing the reference.
The 1998 New Batman Adventures episode “Legends of the Dark Knight” shows a very similar situation involving a piano, as the Joker attempts to steal important sheet music.
There is also another Reddit user who points out that The New Batman Adventures is supposedly a tribute to the 1966 Batman TV series episode “The Dead Ringers,” which included a cameo by Liberace as a villain who tried to kill Batman and Robin using a hole-punching machine controlled by a piano.
It is unclear to us if Justin Roiland and writer Jessica Gao were referencing either The New Batman Adventures or the live-action Batman, but it is hard to miss the batman reference if you pay attention. Roiland has spoken about being a proud fan of Gotham’s hero and we expect more references to the dark Knight as the other 70 episodes of Rick and Morty hit our screens. Season four has already begun production and we can’t wait to see what other surprises they have for us.
