‘Doctor Who’: Meet Jodie Whittaker’s Three Companions in New Teaser

The time is almost here! It won’t be long now before Jodie Whittaker takes over as the Thirteenth Doctor in BBC’s Doctor Who.

While fans have already had a brief opportunity to meet the new doctor during the one-hour Christmas day special Twice Upon a Time, we have yet to be formally introduced to her TARDIS companions, until now!

During this past weekend’s World Cup Final, the first footage of the new trio was released showing Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yasmin (Mandip Gill), and Graham (Bradley Walsh). Fans were quick to comment that three companions seem like a lot for the TARDIS to handle, as Entertainment Weekly points out, back in 1963 when the series first premiered, William Hartnell’s original Doctor also had three companions.

New showrunner Chris Chibnall also spoke to EW about the Time Lord’s newly found friends saying, “Doctor Who is a big, popular, inclusive show. I wanted to feel that everybody who tunes in, around the world, has a character they can relate to.”

Check out the teaser below showing Whittaker’s new companions:

It was announced back in July of last year that Whittaker would be taking over for Capaldi who has been playing the role since 2013. Whittaker is the first female to play the role of the beloved Time Lord, and the announcement of her casting drew controversy and criticism from some but, on the whole, created positive buzz and support from fans and castmates (both past and present).

Former series star John Barrowman (who played Captain Jack Harkness) weighed in during a Heroes and Villain Fan Fest New Jersey earlier this year saying, “It’s a bit about time that we had a girl doctor… I think it’s awesome that she’s going to be a girl and I think it’s great that she’s good looking and I would love for Captain Jack to meet the Doctor.”

Likewise, Peter Capaldi shouted his support from the rooftop of Madison Square Garden during New York Comic Con in October 2017.  He praised Whittaker during his Doctor Who Panel by saying, “She’s amazing.  I’ve seen what she’s done, and you’re in good hands.”
