Here’s Why Jake Johnson’s Lowery Was Missing from ‘Fallen Kingdom’

2015’s Jurassic World was full of serious moments as dinosaurs wreaked havoc on the Isla Nublar theme park packed with civilians. Thankfully, the members of the control room, specifically Jake Johnson’s Lowrey, offered some lighter and funnier moments for audiences to break up the horrors of humans being chomped up and away. Lowrey was a scene-stealer in his vintage Jurassic Park t-shirt, so, it was a shame when news broke that Johnson wouldn’t be reprising his role in the sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Instead, Fallen Kingdom found a young tech nerd who is terrified 100% of the time named Franklin (Justice Smith) stepping into a similar comedic role as he traveled with Claire and Owen to Isla Nublar to help save the dinosaurs from the erupting volcano. While recently speaking to EmpireFallen Kingdom producer and co-writer Colin Trevorrow revealed that Lowery had originally been in an early draft of the script, but they soon felt that his personality maybe wouldn’t have meshed well with their vision for the sequel.

[row]”There may have even been an early moment where Lowery was Franklin’s character because he potentially could have done that job, but he didn’t quite have the same spirit. We did like the idea of [Zia and Franklin] being pretty idealistic young people who are activists who really believe in the cause that Claire believes in. I wasn’t really able to shoehorn [Lowery] into that, he’s kind of a cynical guy.”[/row]

Although, Lowery was probably okay with the decision.

Trevverow’s point does make sense when thinking about how Franklin and Zai’s characters idealistic attitudes served the plot. Not to mention, Franklin’s character was definitely a guaranteed laugh in an often stressful and upsetting sequel, as he consistently found himself in the most absurd of situations.

In our opinion, we do think that Lowery would’ve definitely been on board to join Claire’s cause in Fallen Kingdom, but perhaps he will show back up in the trilogy’s final chapter with some other Jurassic Park/World alums!

Johnson recently wrapped up a seven-year stint on Fox’s New Girl and appeared in the 2018 summer comedy Tag alongside Ed Helms, Jeremy Renner, and Jon Hamm.  Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is still playing in theaters where it continues to dominate the box office having just hit the coverted$1 billion mark.
