Hey Academy, Please Give ‘The Good Doctor’s Freddie Highmore the Emmy Nomination He Deserves
It’s hard to believe that the highly-praised Freddie Highmore has never received a nomination for an Emmy. It wasn’t even until 2017 that he was first nominated for a Golden Globe award. Highmore ended up not winning his category, but is it possible that the nomination alone could open up the doors to him finally getting the recognition he deserves?
The Early Years
Looking back at Highmore’s career overall, he started in acting at such a young age, and even then he was captivating audiences and his coworkers. Before becoming a fan favorite on television, Highmore tugged at our hearts in films such as 2004’s Finding Neverland, 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 2007’s August Rush and 2008’s The Spiderwick Chronicles. His Finding Neverland costar Kate Winslet described Highmore as, “simply the best young actor,” she had ever seen.
Freddie on Television
He soon made the transition to television where he landed the role that would define his career (so far). From 2013 to 2017, Highmore starred in the role that perhaps he’s best known for – playing Norman Bates on the A&E hit television series Bates Motel. The role earned him a People’s Choice Award for Best Actor in 2017. It was an excellent reward for the stellar performance he delivered each week on that series. During the series run, not only did Highmore star in the lead role, but he also stepped behind the camera to served as a writer on two episodes and director for another.
After Bates Motel ended, Highmore almost immediately began work ABC’s smash hit The Good Doctor. Highmore currently stars as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, and he is continuing to win over the hearts of audiences everywhere. The series earned the title of the most watched drama last season, even beating out NBC’s mega-hit This Is Us in viewership.
The Good Doctor and Highmore’s Dr. Murphy, continue to inspire while also delivering all the raw emotion and excitement of a good television medical drama. This series can be thrilling and exciting one minute and a complete and total tear-jerker the next and Highmore’s delicate portrayal of his complex character is really what drives the show to greatness. Not to mention, he does all of this amazing work while masking his British accent flawlessly.
For Your Consideration
If we had to pick one scene to submit for the Academy’s consideration, the below heart-breaking clip from the mid-winter finale would have to be it. Highmore’s typically emotionless Dr. Murphy becomes increasingly overwhelmed, which leads to the character’s meltdown. It’s a heartbreaking and difficult scene to watch, but Highmore is at his best dramatic peak during this clip.
