‘Jumanji 3’ Will not Premiere the Same Weekend As ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

These two blockbusters won’t be competing this time around.

The original Jumanji was released over 20 years ago and starred Robin Williams, and years later, Sony delivered the sequel Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle which had the main action take place within the game, rather the game causing trouble in the real world.

This movie was received well and ended up being a surprise box office smash despite the fact that it came out only five days after Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017’s highest grossing movie). Jumanji 3 was given the green light and there have been questions about whether or not the threequel will directly go head-to-head with Star Wars: Episode IX. However, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson confirmed that the movie will open a week ahead of the next Star Wars movie.

Jumanji 3 was confirmed in April 2018 to open in December 2019 and Dwayne Johnson recently announced on Instagram that the movie will drop on December 13 2019. Jumanji 3, therefore, has a week to draw in more moviegoers and fans before Episode IX becomes the new buzz in town. The new Jumanji 3 will still have competition during its opening weekend i.e. an untitled Blumhouse film which is coming out on that same weekend.

Wonder Woman 1984 was scheduled to come out on December 13 2019 but it was later moved to November 1 of the same year.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ended up making over $961 million worldwide, making if the fifth highest-grossing movie on 2017 although its budget was somewhere between $90 million to $110 million. With a box office performance like that, it makes sense that Sony decided to keep Jumanji 3 in December. And honestly, it would have been interesting to see what a direct Jumanji 3 v Star Wars: Episode IX clash would have looked like. No plot details for Jumanji 3 have come out yet, but Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan will all be back for the threequel, as will director Jake Kasdan.
