First look at Kristen Wiig as Cheetah in ‘Wonder Woman 1984’

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins shares the first look of Kristen Wiig as Cheetah in the highly anticipated sequel.

Wiig plays Barbara Minerva and can be seen in what looks like a natural history museum.

Barbara Minerva is an archeologist who has the ability to transform into a cheetah. She becomes obsessed with obtaining artifacts and becomes intrigued by Wonder Woman’s treasures, such as her lasso of truth.

Wiig’s version of Cheetah is the third version of the character, according to Jenkins, after Priscilla Rich and Deborah Domaine. Rich’s Cheetah character was first introduced in 1943 and Minerva’s Cheetah first appeared in 1987.

In the comics, Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva is a British archaeologist, born as the heiress of a vast fortune in the ancient family site in Nottinghamshire. Her curiosity leads her to Africa, where she ultimately gains her cheetah powers. Being half cheetah seems pretty cool, except that, these powers come at a price. Minerva experiences intense pain while in her human form and her cheetah side tends to take over the human half.

It’s likely that Jenkins’ character could be given a different origin story as the film takes place three years prior to Minerva’s comic book introduction. It is still unsure just how far Jenkins is going to deviate, however. Either way, it should be interesting to see Wiig, who is a physical comedian, take on this role.

There is still no word as to what Wiig’s costume will look like or how close her character will follow the original comics.

Wonder Woman 1984 flies into theaters November 1st, 2019.
