Alex Danvers is Supergirl’s New DEO Director

In the season finale of Supergirl, “Battles Won and Lost”, the director of the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO) stepped down and named Alex Danvers as his successor. Alex approached J’onn J’onzz as he meditated towards the end of the episode. While sitting down across from him, she announced that she was giving him her notice that she wanted to start a family and discover what it was like living outside the DEO, although she felt that she could not do those things as a field agent. J’onn however interrupted her with a counteroffer: he asked her to be the DEO. He explained that living with M’yrrn, his father, had opened his eyes, therefore he wanted to live like other Martians before him, spreading peace. He also clarified that he was not leaving for good as he would always be around for his family, but he had decided that the DEO was no longer a place for him.

J’onn further explained to Alex that being director also meant that she wouldn’t have to be in the field as much as she was before and she could therefore start a family without putting herself in harm’s way every day. Alex was convinced. She stepped up as director at the end of the episode. It’s yet to seen what J’onn will do next, and Kara’s relationship with Alex.

Executive producer Robert Rovner explained to TVLine that it was important for J’onn’s character to take in the teachings M’yrrn was trying to impart on him.

“Our Worldkiller story took us off-world a lot, but what’s great about this show is that we get to tell stories about what’s happening in the world and use National City to reflect that. We want to explore J’onn being on the streets among the people so we can continue to tell those stories.” He said.

Executive producer Jessica Queller added that Alex was an exciting prototype of the process human beings go through while they strive to have it all.

“She’s a career woman, but she wants balance. The process of how she achieves – or doesn’t achieve – that is what we’re excited to tell.” Jessica added.

Supergirl, which stars Melissa Benoist, David Harewood, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh and Alex Danvers, returns to The CW this Fall!
