‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Star Dave Bautista Would Love to Make a Drax Solo Film

Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy debuted back in August 2014, Drax (a role played flawlessly by Dave Bautista) has emerged as a fan-favorite character. It’s no wonder that there’s early chatter regarding the possibility of a Drax solo film.

Last month, Guardians director James Gunn tweeted out his thoughts on a Drax spin-off film. Gunn is highly in favor of the project and responded to a fan by saying, “I think a Drax movie could be incredible.”

We think so too, James and now we also know that Bautista would be onboard as well. Entertainment Weekly recently chatted with Bautista while he was promoting his new film Hotel Artemis. EW told Bautista about Gunn’s tweet and asked him his thoughts on a Drax movie. As it turns out, he’s “all up for it!” Bautista’s said:

[row]“I didn’t realize he’d tweeted about it. We have talked about it quite a bit. I’m not going to hold my breath. I see where they would have trouble fitting it in. I don’t know if Marvel sees me or my character as that type of investment. But, yeah, I would be all up for it. I think [James] wanted it to really go to the Drax the Destroyer formula, where Drax has his violent tendencies. [Laughs] I think he wanted to lean… towards that a little bit, so they could tell the full story of Drax.”[/row]

With the recent announcement that a film centered around Jared Leto’s Joker (a minor role in DC’s 2016 film Suicide Squad) is in the works, Bautista seems hopeful that the odds could be in his favor for a Drax film. On Wednesday, Bautista tweeted a response to a tweet calling the Joker film a. “bad idea” by saying,  “But on the bright side! Which I usually try to look at… if this can happen then the chances of me getting a Drax movie have got to be astronomically high! Like so high that I’m going to stop tweeting and sit by the phone and wait for @MarvelStudios to call! ….any second now!”

While fans will have to wait and see what comes about for Drax, Bautista did confirm to EW that he will be back for more galaxy-saving action in the third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy. He briefly gave an update on all the knowledge he has so far about the film which is pretty much just that it’s in the works.  He said, “I know that we’re going to start going into pre-production later this year and we will start filming next year,” he said. “I know James Gunn is writing the script — and to be honest that’s all I know.”

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is expected to begin filming in 2019.
