‘Legally Blonde 3’ May Finally Be Happening!

Start practicing those Bend & Snaps because we may be seeing some more of Elle Woods, Havard Law Extraordinaire, very soon! According to Deadline, Reese Witherspoon is in some serious talks with MGM to reprise her role as the lovable blonde lawyer for a third installment in the Legally Blonde franchise!

It’s been seventeen years since the first film hit theaters in 2001 and MGM is working to get nearly the entire creative team back on board, including Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah who wrote the first film’s script. Reese Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine (Wild, Big Little Lies) will, of course, be on board as will original producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel.

The thought of returning as Elle Woods has always been something Witherspoon has spoken fondly of. Back in 2015 she spoke with Fashionably Late about just how important Elle’s story could be in today’s political climate.

It’s kind of great right now because we’re talking about women in politics and how important that is to get more women. And I think it’d be kind of a cool thing to have her be a Supreme Court justice or somebody who runs for office.”

She echoed those thoughts again in 2017 when at an E! News dinner event.

‘We’ve thought about it. I need somebody really clever to come up with a great idea, and we’ll do it. I do think it’s a good time to do it. I think women need that kind of positivity right now.’

The original film was a huge success, scoring $141 million at the box office, and while it’s 2003 sequel Red, White & Blonde also did well with $124 million, we choose not to talk about it. The movie also inspired a hit 2007 Broadway show, which is still traveling around the US and UK today.
