‘This Is Us’ Has Already Filmed Some Series Finale Scenes

The way that the This Is Us story is told it wouldn’t be too surprising to hear that the show could go on for a very long time. By using flashbacks, multiple timelines and decades, and a plethora of characters, the show is able to create brand new stories that people care about at the drop of a hat, but staying on the air forever is not something that creator Dan Fogelman ever envisioned.

“We’re pretty far along. Our writers and I are kind of to the end. We have a path for each season of the show. We’ve always had a plan… I don’t think this show will ever — despite any success it may or may not have — will ever overstay its welcome, and we have a story to tell. And we want to do this the right way. And so we have a plan,” he told the moderator at a recent This Is Us For Your Emmy consideration panel.

His plan doesn’t just stop with an idea on paper though. In typical This Is Us fashion, Fogelman has already thought so far ahead that he’s even started shooting parts of it.

“I’ve actually already shot pieces of the final scene in the series.”

In addition to some unexpected series finale scoop, Fogleman also spoke to what viewers can expect heading into season 3. The most recent season finale ended with some shocking cliffhangers that took place during various moments in the future. Expect to see a deeper dive into Toby’s depression and Beth’s struggles with Deja in what will be showcase episodes that:

“Show what Toby and Beth were like before they entered this family.”

Of course, there was one cliffhanger that had everybody talking, which was the scene in which older Randall and Tess discuss going to see “her” creating the next big mystery now that we know how Jack died.

“Our plan right now is that big questions will be answered in the course of the season. I think people are going to be surprised with how we use that timeline.”

Fogelman has already revealed that season 3 will focus a lot on Jack’s past, including his days fighting in Vietnam. We also had the chance to interview Jon Huertas, who plays Miguel, who also revealed that we can expect a deeper look into Miguel and Rebecca’s love story in addition to the humble beginnings of Jack and Miguel’s friendship.
