‘Siren’ is a Dark Fantasy Tale To Yearn For (Review)

Mermaids. Ever since I was a little girl, I would love reading fairy tales about these beautiful creatures of the deep. Like most girls my age, I would pretend I was a mermaid whenever I was swimming around in my parents pool or when I would string up some seashell necklaces on my yearly trip to Wildwood. Bottom line, I had countless dreams and wishes of one day being a mermaid.

As I got older, it grew beyond the childish love. I would watch documentaries, read tales of sailors at sea who swore to Odin that they spotted these beautiful creatures, and I would also continue to buy little tiny mermaid artifacts; statues, necklaces and figures.

Essentially, I pictured mermaids to be just like Ariel from Disney’s The Little Mermaid. I saw them as fun, full of an abundance of joy and essentially the Broadway stars of the ocean. No matter what TV show or movie I watched, that was how I always saw mermaids. Recently, I stumbled across a divine gem – and that would be Siren. I first heard of Siren when I was at New York Comic Con this past year, and I followed it ever since. When it finally debuted on Freeform, I was in absolute awe. This was not your typical mermaid show – and I absolutely love it.

Siren centers on the town of Bristol Cove, known for its town legend as the ‘Mermaid Capitol’ of the world. When a mysterious girl named Ryn makes her appearance on land, the town finds itself turned upside down as Ryn begins to wreak havoc in search of her captured sister, Donna. During Ryn’s journey to find her sister and bring her back to the water, she befriends marine biologists Ben and Maddie along with Helen Hawkins, a town resident with a secret of her own. As the season progresses, we learn that the town contains much darker secrets other than what is out there in the deep waters of the ocean. Secrets not only select locals are trying to protect – but also the United States Government.

I absolutely LOVED Siren. This is not your typical everyday mermaid story. The mermaids themselves are completely different, designed as predators as opposed to your animated Disney Princess. Thinking about it, if mermaids really are out there then they would have to be predators, right?

Not only was the cast absolutely perfect for the show, but the plot and story-line was one that kept me yearning for the next episode – like immediately! Not only does it focus on the mythological aspect of these beautiful creatures, it ties in some real life issues that our oceans face today – and in a way that’s not the ‘documentary’ kind of a way, it really adds to the story-line.

Typically, when I stumble upon the first season of a series I find myself struggling to get through the first half and then FINALLY i get attached after the climatic moment halfway through the season. However with Siren, I was hooked after the very first episode. There is a chemistry and a great mystery among all of the characters, and now that it has officially been renewed for a second season – I can hardly wait.

Although the Season One finale was a heartbreaking one for me, I am highly looking forward to the series second season. In a recent interview I did with one of the shows stars, Rena Owen, who plays Helen on the show, we talked about how this year is the year for water. We’ve got Siren, Aquaman and The Meg to look forward to. The countdown for all of these upcoming projects has begun for me and I can’t wait to see some trailers, photos and release dates coming up.

If your looking for a dark fantasy tale, I highly recommend checking out Siren. It is now available for streaming on Hulu!

Trust me when I say, you will NOT regret!

Congratulations to the cast, crew and writing staff of Siren and Freeform on being renewed for Season 2!
