The Russo Brothers on ‘Infinity War’ Losses and the Closest ‘Avengers 4’ Title Guess

©Marvel Studios 2018

If you haven’t seen Avengers: Infinity War yet, we’d recommend not reading any further. This post contains spoilers.

While there were many takeaways in Avengers: Infinity War, one of the most prominent was that you never know when the last time you’ll see someone will be the last time. With the Avengers torn at the beginning of the film, some heroes not in the film at all, and a wide rift still existing between Steve and Tony, any deaths in the film resonated far beyond the moment they occurred.

Some of those last goodbyes and last words muttered made us think of the larger picture. These lost heroes and the heartbreak that came along with them In a recent interview, Anthony Russo had this to say about how they chose who died at the hands of Thanos.

‘Joe and I can’t go into too much detail because we’re not gonna talk about where the story goes from here. All of our choices are based on story. It’s based upon the road that these characters have traveled, in not only this movie but throughout the entire entity up to this point because, again, these movies are the culmination. So all we can say is that they are very focused story choices. That’s our motivation for everything. And, again, that’s why we love Marvel so much is that they never let the tail wag the dog. The creative choices always lead the process and then they figure out how to pull off the miracle of making it work on a business level.’

They’re really hitting the point home that every loss in Infinity War was permanent. When it was suggested that Star-Lord may get redemption with fans in Avengers: 4, they responded that it wasn’t possible because he’s dead.

Color us optimistic, but we’re holding out hope that we get some of those heroes back. If not, we’ll be pretending that we don’t know an Infinity War and that they’re all just on vacation somewhere.

As for the Avengers 4 title, don’t expect it anytime soon. The Russos also touched on the fact that Avengers: Forever is the closest guess, so far. For us, we’re content waiting to find out until they tell us themselves. We’re still trying to sort our emotions from this one.

You can see Avengers: Infinity War in theaters, now.
