John Green’s ‘Looking for Alaska’ Series Finds a Home at Hulu
It may have taken thirteen years, but John Green’s best-selling YA novel Looking For Alaska is finally making its way to the screen! Hulu will be adapting the novel as an eight-episode limited series with Paramount Television and The OC’s Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.
Looking for Alaska has been a passion project for Schwartz who will serve as Executive Producer and Showrunner. He was given Green’s unpublished manuscript back in 2005 and worked diligently to turn it into a movie, which unfortunately never came to fruition. Years later Schwartz approached Green again with the idea of a limited series instead and with the help of Paramount TV president Amy Powell they were able to re-acquire the rights. Schwartz and Savage are the team behind another popular Hulu series, The Runaways, so they will feel right at home with Looking for Alaska.
It has been a very long thirteen years trying to figure out how/whether to adapt Looking for Alaska, but Josh cared about the book before almost anyone else had even read it, and he and Stephanie have worked so hard to get to this moment, and I am really excited. I know they care a lot about the book and have worked so hard for the last thirteen years to get it to a good place — and I really think it is finally there. So, I’m hopeful!” Green told fans on Reddit.
The synopsis on Green’s official website for Looking For Alaska reads “Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words–and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet Francois Rabelais called the “Great Perhaps.” Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young. Clever, funny, screwed-up, and dead sexy, Alaska will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps.”
Looking for Alaska marks the third John Green adaption. His novels The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns were both turned into very successful films. Are you excited about Looking for Alaska finally being adapted for TV?
Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
