‘The Originals’ Season 5 Episode 3 ‘Ne Me Quitte Pas’ Recap

This week the “Forever and Always” Mikaelson family commitment was put to the ultimate test when Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is forced to reach out to Elijah (Daniel Gillies) for help to find the missing Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin). However, when it does not go as Klaus plans and we see the strong family Mikaelson bond forever doomed.

We flash back seven years earlier to when Elijah awakens freshly in his new amnesiac state courtesy of Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) in New York City and when he meets Antionette (Jaime Murray). He explains to her that just 6 days earlier he woke up with no memories and he was “starving” and had to “feed” and only had a box full of stuff that meant nothing to him. Inside the box, he had a nice suit, cufflinks with the letter “E” on them and a note that said “Don’t Look Back” that he did not write. Antionette seems intrigued and agrees to take him under her wing of sorts.

“E” soon started to really listen to Antionette and what kind life she lives so he becomes fascinated by her. She taught him things such as how to compel and that there is a calmer vampire lifestyle that can be lived instead of the party lifestyle. However, a run in with Marcel Gerard changes things for “Elijah“. Marcel warns Elijah to leave town before someone important comes to town. If he doesn’t leave, then Marcel would kill him and Antionette. Antoinette leaves town because she knows that Elijah had to deal with this on his own. Elijah continues to try and find answers until Marcel returns and warns him again. Marcel tells him that he asked Marcel to compel him to forget everything to save the people he loves and that he needed to move on with his life somewhere far away from there.

Elijah then moves to Manosque, France, where he finds Antionette, playing the piano in a bar. Where he apologizes for not coming sooner and they kiss.

Fast forward to the present day. Elijah and Antionette are sitting in the same bar playing the piano together and he pulls out an engagement ring. Antionette tells him to wait that they needed champagne and she goes to the kitchen where she has a run-in with a very determined Klaus who tries to compel her. She returns to the piano and tells Elijah about her run-in with Klaus in the kitchen. Elijah has her empty the bar as he prepares to come face to face with his past for the first time in 7 years.

Klaus steps from the shadows and explains that to Elijah who he is and that his family needs him and that it was time for him to come home to New Orleans to help them. However, Elijah reaction leaves Klaus stunned and forever broken. Elijah admits that since his encounter with Marcel that he has researched the Mikaelson family and that he wants nothing to do with them and that he will never come back to help them. The moment he looks Klaus in the eyes and says, “Elijah Mikaelson is DEAD” and snaps Klaus’s neck proved to Klaus that indeed the Elijah they once new and always loved has been lost forever and Klaus calls home and explains that he could not find Elijah.

Elijah Mikaelson walks away from his family, his traditions, his love of Hope and Haley and sadly the family motto of “Forever and Always”. As the episode comes to the end, Elijah says goodbye to the old “Elijah Mikaelson” walks to the window, opens the curtain, stands in the sunlight and bursts into the flames as the show ends.

This episode was a hard one for me to watch as a huge Elijah fan. I have no doubt that he will come “home” but I still did not enjoy the whole turn his back on the family. I also am not a fan of the “Antionette” something is off with that character or maybe I am just a Hayley and Elijah fan could the problem there.  So I am hoping Elijah comes home soon.
