This ‘Infinity War’ Moment (Probably) Caused a Gasp Heard ‘Round the World

If you haven’t seen Avengers: Infinity War yet, we’d recommend not reading any further. We’d also recommend staying in the happy little bubble that exists before you step into the theater, you’ll miss it once it’s gone.

If you ask anyone who sat through Infinity War this weekend what moment was the most shocking, you’d likely get the same response. ‘There are just too many to name.’ Sitting in a theater surrounded by massive fans during an opening night event, there were gasps, tears, screams, and sighs heard a number of times through the film.

There were moments of laughter and happiness, too. There were moments when fans cheered and clapped. They knew, even if just for a moment, that the Avengers had the upper hand. Though those moments seemed few and far between.

The trailers and TV spots sort of prepared fans for some of the hard moments, but one scene actually threw many for quite the loop when it unfolds in the film. In a scene where many of assumed an emotionally broken Tony Stark was looking down at physically broken Peter Parker, there was a massive twist.

What happened, instead, was a very painful moment where Thanos stabs Tony Stark – thus ensuring Iron Man would die at the hands of the villain.

This is a death we saw as a possibility going into the film. After watching it almost play out in front of us, it’s hard to see that as a possibility.

It was heart-wrenching, watching the life slowly seep out of Tony as he tried to make peace with dying at the hands of the villain. it was death made more poignant by the fact that he knew an evil was coming. He knew it for years. Now, he was face to face with it.

Luckily, this time, we didn’t have to accept Tony’s death. Instead, Doctor Strange offers up the Time Stone for his life. Not before audiences had to watch him suffer for a moment, though.

Tony asks Strange why he’d do such a thing. It was more evident then than ever before that it was the only way they’d have a chance at defeating Thanos. It was also one step closer for Thanos to get exactly what he wanted.

How is it possible that both worlds align?

The only one who truly knows is Doctor Strange, and he was a victim of Thanos’ snap. Knowing that he traveled in time and saw that this specific end is the only end that allows them to come out on top, one may have to believe that the bigger reason for this exists. One has to believe that Tony’s life being spared plays a big hand in the overall win.

Tony didn’t have to die a hero’s death yet, but he did have to see those he loved perish.

Avengers 4 hits theaters in 2019, so you may as well gear up and see Infinity War a few more times in theaters. Or you can pretend that never happened and re-watch the first MCU films, smiling and laughing and ignoring Thanos’ presence altogether.
