The Last Act of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Took Fans by Surprise

If you haven’t seen Avengers: Infinity War yet, we’d recommend not reading any further. We’d also recommend staying in the happy little bubble that exists before you step into the theater, you’ll miss it once it’s gone.

If you’re just about to leave home to see Avengers: Infinity War for the second time this weekend, you may still in shock from the events in the last few moments of the film. In fact, the entire film brought more surprises than one could have imagined.

If you thought you were prepared, you weren’t. Turns out, many fans felt the same way. All you have to do (if you’ve seen the movie) is check hashtags on social media. People are having a hard time dealing with everything that came along with Thanos’ real introduction to the MCU.

While many knew that deaths were being delivered on a silver platter in Avengers: Infinity War, they never imagined them on this scale.

If you ask fans who’ve seen the film, using the word death to describe what happened in the last 15 minutes of the film is a touchy subject. Some flat out refuse to see it as a death while others are convinced that the end of the first 10 years of the MCU just ended heroes who still had a lot of life left to give.

Yes, we’ve been promised that the deaths in Infinity War are permanent, but Doctor Strange saw what had to be done for the Avengers to win. He knew Tony’s life had to be spared and he seemed confident in the fact that the good guys win this one. Thanos’ snap decision can’t have left permanent consequences. At least, not for everyone.

That doesn’t mean it was any easier to watch.

When Bucky starts to dissipate, his last word is Steve. It was heartbreaking. When Peter says he doesn’t feel so good and then clings to Tony like he was holding on for dear life-what a moment. When Okoye cried out for her T’Challa, we all wept and when War Machine couldn’t find Sam, those moments were plentiful.

Bucky Barnes, Black Panther, Falcon, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Doctor Strange, Nick Fury, Groot, Drax, Mantis, Scarlet Witch, and Maria Hill all met their untimely demise at the hand of Thanos. However, it’s entirely possible that their existence isn’t obsolete, completely.

Thanos ends up in a peaceful realm. (Not that he deserves it as the film draws to a close.) Before then, we see him at a place some fans believe to be the Soulworld. This makes sense seeing as he was reunited with Gamora, who was sacrificed for the Soul Stone. There’s also a moment where he tells a young Gamora that his mission cost him ‘everything’. Perhaps foreshadowing that, at least for a split second, he realizes that it may not have been worth it after all?

As Thanos ends the film with a grin, one can’t be sure of the thought that crosses his mind for more than a moment.

Alas, we have a year to wait to find out what happens to many of our favorite heroes, but we’ll likely need that long to recover.

If you haven’t seen Avengers: Infinity War yet, it’s in theaters now.
