‘Labyrinth’ is Being Made into a Stage Musical

Next weekend, thanks to Fathom Events, the 1986 Jim Henson classic film Labyrinth will be returning to theaters for a special three-day event!

On April 29th and May 1st and 2nd, the film will be playing at a select number of theaters for nationwide fan celebration. Recently, Brian Henson, son of the film’s late director Jim Henson and Chairman of The Jim Henson Company, sat down with Forbes to talk about the event.

During the interview, Henson confirmed that a stage musical production based on the film is in the works! Additionally, he commented on rumors that a sequel to the film might be in development. When asked for an update on the rumored sequel, Henson said:

[row]”There isn’t really an update. I can say we are still excited about it but the process moves very slowly and very carefully. We’re still excited about the idea of a sequel, we are working on something but nothing that’s close enough to say it’s about to be in pre-production or anything like that. We are working on a theatrical adaptation of the original movie for the stage. Those are the two areas of excitement for the Labyrinth property that we have. We are working on both of those but I certainly don’t have a timeline for them.”[/row]

Henson revealed that, while plans for the stage production are taking shape, a songwriter has not yet been named.  Additionally, plans for where the musical version will debut has not yet been established.  When asked if the production will make it’s way to New York City’s Broadway, Henson said, “Not necessarily Broadway; it could be for London’s West End, but it will be a stage show, a big theatrical version. It’s very exciting.”

Directed and co-written by Muppet creator Jim Henson, Labyrinth is about a 16-year-old girl named Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) who, annoyed by the fact that she has to babysit her little brother, wishes for him to be taken away. When this actually comes true and he’s taken, Sarah then has 13 hours to solve a complex maze in order to rescue her brother from the Goblin King (David Bowie).
