‘Night Court’ Star Harry Anderson Dies at 65

On Monday night, news broke from multiple local news outlets that Harry Anderson, best known for his role as Judge Harry T. Stone on the popular 80s sitcom Night Court was found dead at his Asheville, NC home. He was 65 years old. While a cause of death has not yet been disclosed, Asheville police informed reporters that no foul play was expected.

Prior to starring on Night Court, Anderson started out with a reoccurring role on the classic hit series Cheers.  He played Harry “The Hat” Gittes, a local magician. Anderson was an accomplished comedic magician in real life as well.  This role would eventually transform into his Night Court character.

Anderson starred in Night Court alongside John Larroquette, Markie Post and Richard Moll for nine successful seasons. Anderson himself earned three consecutive Emmy nominations for his role on the series which debuted in 1984 as a midseason replacement. Night Court aired 193 episodes and officially went off the air in 1993.

He later went on to star in a CBS series called Dave’s World which ran for four seasons through 1997.  Most recently, Anderson appeared on a few episodes of 30 Rock and Son of the Beach and co-starred in the indie film A Matter of Faith.

Harry Anderson will be truly missed but his legacy in the industry and his impact on comedy will never be forgotten.
