‘Arrow’ Recap ‘Fundamentals’

You know how they say ‘it ain’t easy being green’? Well, it definitely is not easy being both green AND alone. This weeks episode was extremely powerful, and certainly a character developing episode for Oliver. Although Oliver may feel like what he really needs is to ‘get back to the basics’ – he may wind up being very wrong, after all. Personally, I feel as though Oliver needs his team now more than ever.

‘Fundamentals’ kicks off with Oliver fighting his way through the SCPD, demanding that the corrupt officers tell him where Ricardo Diaz is. Oliver suddenly finds the room that Diaz is in, to find out that he is surrounded by cops. Suddenly, we are cut to a time-frame… 10 hours earlier. Down in the Arrow Cave, Oliver and Felicity talk about how they best need to take down Diaz. Felicity urges Oliver that he needs help. Oliver turns to see Diggle in the Arrow Cave as well, who was called there by Felicity in attempt to make peace with Oliver. They can’t seem to come to an agreement, and there is still much tension between the pair. Oliver leaves, and heads to City Hall to meet with a council board member to talk about the matter of the corrupt police department and Ricardo Diaz. Following that meeting, Oliver updates Quentin Lance about the current situation of Team Arrow – and how they have fallen apart.

Oliver heads home, where tensions continue to rise. After snapping out at William and accidentally destroying his science fair project, Felicity kicks him out of their apartment and then tells him that she thinks they need space. Oliver asks Lance to come meet him at the HQ, where the two of them talk about Oliver’s current situation. After Lance leaves, Oliver hears strange noises coming from the elevator. It opens to reveal Adrian Chase. The two of them fight, before Oliver finally snaps his neck. Oliver turns away for a brief second, and then turns back to realize Adrian’s body is gone and he’s hallucinating. Oliver runs a blood test on himself and finds out that he has somehow been drugged with Vertigo – perhaps with the councilman that he met with earlier when they shook hands.

Oliver continues to see the hallucination of Adrian Chase, which follows him back to City Hall. The hallucination of Chase tells Oliver that he is his own worst enemy. Oliver finally finds Lance and learns that he is late to his impeachment proceedings. As he continues to walk through City Hall, he sees random hallucinations: Laurel, Rene, Dinah, and Curtis. He also hallucinates Diaz and himself in the Season One suit. Oliver finally gets his head partially on, and walks into his hearing an hour later. Lance pulls him aside and tells him that the only evidence they have will connect him to the Green Arrow – but it is the only card they have to play. After Oliver presents the evidence that connects the employees he fired (the DA and Chief of Police). Lance then instructs him to head home and get the Vertigo out of his system. After Lance leaves, Oliver hallucinates Chase one last time who tells him that he needs to stick to his mission and go after Diaz alone – who is at the police station every night.

Felicity and William come home from the science fair when she gets a ping on her tablet. She immediately calls Lance and tells him that Oliver is headed to the police department in pursuit of Diaz. She then heads there, and finally tracks down Oliver. She does her absolute best to convince him that she is real, and not a hallucination. That going into the backroom would be a deathtrap – as Diaz is surrounded by over a dozen officers with guns. After a few minutes, Oliver believes her and the two escape together. They all return to the bunker, where Oliver tells her that he needs to get back to the basics with no team. Lance walks in and turns on the TV. Oliver has been impeached, which means Lance is the new mayor of Star City.

At the police station, Diaz meets with Black Siren. He tells her that his plan to take down Oliver bit by bit is now officially in the works, and that City Hall is just step one.

Arrow will return on Thursday, April 19th at 9PM/EST on The CW.
