‘The Good Doctor’ Adds Four New Series Regulars as One Original Exits

Season 2 of The Good Doctor is still a long way off but, the sophomore season of the ABC hit series is starting off with a bit of a casting shake-up at San Jose St. Bonaventure.

First, the good news. Four fan favorites are being promoted to series regulars for the upcoming second season. Newcomers Will Yun Lee, who plays the former cop turned doctor Alex Park, and Fiona Gubelmann, who plays the cut-throat resident Dr. Morgan Reznick, have both been bumped to regulars for season 2. Additionally, season one vet Christina Chang who plays Dr. Neil Melendez’s (Nicholas Gonzalez) counterpart Dr. Audrey Lim has also received a promotion to series regular.

In addition to the three current cast promos, the lovable Paige Spara, who plays Lea, Dr. Shaun Murphy’s (Freddie Highmore) love interest, will be rejoining the cast as a regular. Spara originally left the series during the first season when her character moved home to Hershey, PA.  She expressed excitement and gratitude for her character’s return via Twitter on Monday night.

Now, for the not-so-good news. The series will be saying goodbye to one of its original cast members. Chuku Modu (who played Dr. Jared Kalu in the first season) is reportedly not returning for season two. His character has been on a thin ice at St. Bonaventure after being fired for physically assaulting another doctor who was sexually harassing Dr. Claire Browne (played by Antonia Thomas). After threatening legal action, Kalu got his job back, however, it was inferred that his return was only temporary. In the season 1 finale, we learned that Kalu had applied for and was accepted to a program in Denver, Colorado, once again, providing an exit scenario for the character.

The casting news was first reported by Deadline.

Congratulations to Will Yun Lee, Fiona Gubelmann, Christina Chang and Paige Spara!  We look forward to seeing more of their characters in season 2!
