Marvel Crush Monday: Captain America

When you think of Captain America, aside from a hero who wants to save the country, you first think of his heart.  A man who never surrendered, never gave up, never looked at the odds stacked against him and decided to bow out.

I can do this all day.

Pre-serum Steve had that fight in him too. It wasn’t just the stars and stripes version, the hero with brains and brawn. It was the kid from Brooklyn who beat off bullies with a trash can lid in an alley. Or tried to.

Who? Steve Rogers 

Born Steve Rogers, Captain America got his start much differently than most. A selling point for the hero is that he doesn’t want to kill anyone, he doesn’t like bullies but he refused to become one himself.

The moment is a memorable one in Cap’s story. He embraces the role of a hero with a great sense of responsibility. He wants to believe in the good of people, it’s a sentiment that keeps him from becoming jaded.

My faith is in people, I guess. Individuals. And I’m happy to say for the most part, they haven’t let me down. Which is why I can’t let them down either.

Why?

Steve’s moral compass is easily one of the most appealing parts of his charm. Yes, he’s almost painfully handsome and he can totally hold a helicopter with nothing but his insane upper body strength – but he’s inherently good.

Maybe we hold on to that, as fans, because it’s what we desire to have more of. Chris Evans brings his own heart into the character. You’ve likely seen his tweets or interviews where he shines with a kindness and a compassion for fairness. He isn’t Steve Rogers, but Steve Rogers is who he is because of Chris Evans.

In the face of adversity, Cap stills himself and prepares for opposition. When he’s fighting for what’s right – no fight is too big. When he’s fighting for those who need him, no battle is too far out of reach.

In Captain America: Civil War, we saw the Avengers split, for more than just one reason. Under the surface, tensions were building and when push came to shove, he stood up for his friend.

That fight ended up becoming the battle between the larger group of friends, and when sides were chosen – you saw Cap struggle. He never wanted there to be sides, but when the line had to be drawn, he followed his heart.

At the end of the film, he reached out to Tony, reminding him that even though he was hurting – he’d be there if he ever needed him. Going as far as to give him a phone with a number to contact him as he fell off the radar.

It shows that his loyalty knows no bounds, and that his heart is always in the right place.

As we look ahead to Infinity War, we know that the Captain American we know and love is going to sacrifice whatever it takes to save the world. To save those he loves. To save the Avengers.

Whatever it takes.
