Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson on Steve and Natasha’s Bond

The hype surrounding Avengers: Infinity War is bigger than ever, and rightfully so. With rumors of ticket sales and a new trailer dropping literally any time now and just a few weeks until it’s theater premiere – it’s a massive deal.

EW paid a visit to the set months ago and got some behind the scenes looks at the film. Part of that experience brought some cast interviews. One of which was with Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson where they discussed what brings their characters together.

On Natasha’s current state of mind, Scarlett Johansson says that basically, she’s more shut off than we’ve seen her so far.

‘I think it’s been a dark time. I wouldn’t say that my character has been particularly hopeful but I think shes hardened even more than she probably was before.’

Chris Evans was there for the chat as well and said that he feels like it’s a defense mechanism for her character. It’s something she can control.

‘It’s always felt like Natasha uses her cynicism as a defense mechanism. She weaponizes it for survival. I think Steve is a little newly calloused in the ways of the world. But Natasha is always going to be a couple steps ahead of him in terms of experience and knowledge. They’ve leaned on each other for different reasons. It’s reinforced the friendship.’

One of the lighter parts of Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the bond between the two of them. From their ‘kiss’ which brought some laughs in the car to the way Natasha slowly grew more comfortable around Steve – it was nice to see a strong bond form between them.

That bond was reiterated through Captain America: Civil War, especially when she helped Bucky and Steve escape.

We’re excited to see what’s next for them in Infinity War and how they help one another continue to grow, both within themselves and as the heroes the world needs.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27th.
