REVIEW: Zach Braff’s New ABC Comedy ‘Alex, Inc.’ Is Adorably Inspiring

This is a spoiler-free review of the upcoming ABC comedy series Alex, Inc.

In a world of remakes and reboots, why not take a risk and start something completely new?  That’s exactly what Zach Braff’s character sets out to do with ABC’s adorable and inspiring new sitcom Alex, Inc.

The new series follows Braff’s character Alex Schuman, a radio journalist who has a Jerry Maguire type moment.  He quits his long-time job to pursue starting up his own podcast company with a goal of telling stories that really matter to the world.  He quickly realizes that he bit off more than he could chew but, with the support of his loving family and faithful friends, he finds the inspiration he needs to keep moving forward.

Alex, Inc. will be Braff’s first time returning to television in a starring role since the popular series Scrub concluded back in 2010.  The new series will reunite Braff with Scrubs writer and executive producer Matt Tarses.  With this dynamic duo back together again, the series definitely has a familiar feel to it.  Viewers will certainly be able to draw some comparison to Scrubs.  For example, Braff’s Alex Schuman is a quirky character who narrates much of his day-to-day life (just like JD) only this time, it’s via a podcast recording.  The similarities pretty much stop there and the show completely stands on its own as a series.  It’s almost as if the television series Scrubs grew up, matured but kept its same golden sense of humor intact.

At its core, Alex, Inc. is very much about finding your purpose in life, following your dreams and learning to lean on your support systems.  In the series, Alex’s support system is comprised of a stellar cast of characters including cousin Eddie (played by Michael Imperioli), his overly enthusiastic coworker Deirdre (played by Hillary Anne Matthews), his wife Rooni Schuman (played by Tiya Sircar) and his young children.

The interactions between Matthews and Imperioli’s characters are priceless and Sircar does a wonderful job of playing a strong female lead.  She’s a mom/District Attorney who scrambles to do all she can to keep her family on track while helping to support Alex in his new business venture.  It’s impossible not to fall in love with all of these characters, especially when you realize they all just have Alex’s best interest in mind.

In the true spirit of the series, Alex, Inc. tells a great story – one that I think viewers will want to see unfold each week.  I can’t wait to see more of this show!  Alex, Inc. premieres on Wednesday, March 28th at 8:30 PM EST on ABC.  Welcome back, Zach!  We’ve missed you!
