On Thursday, Deadline reported that New Line has officially purchased a screenplay from series creator David Chase and Lawrence Konner which will act as a prequel to The Sopranos series.

Details surrounding the plot are scarce, however, we do know that the working title for the production is The Many Saints of Newark and it will be set during the 1960’s Newark riots – a time in New Jersey history when African-American and Italian gangs were feuding throughout the city.

Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement

“David is a masterful storyteller and we, along with our colleagues at HBO, are thrilled that he has decided to revisit, and enlarge, the Soprano universe in a feature film.”

Chase will also be producing the film and will have a hand in selecting the director as well.

The original series premiered on HBO in 1999 and ran for six seasons in total.  The series starred the late James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Lorraine Bracco and Michael Imperioli.
