My Year of Gaming: ‘Injustice: Gods Among Us’

My Year of Gaming: Injustice: Gods Among Us

I purchased a Playstation 4 at the beginning of 2017 and it is the first time I have had a console since Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword came out on the Wii. Naturally, I have a lot of catching up to do and my backlog is incredibly massive. During the course of a year, I played my way through 23 games, and I figured I would take the time to share a little bit about each game. Perhaps you’ve played them and want to hear another opinion, or maybe you’ve been holding off on investing in a particular game. Either way, it’s never a bad time to spread your love of gaming.

I am not one for fighting games because I am a button-masher. But the idea of having DC heroes and villains beat the snot out of each other was calling my name, so I picked up a copy of Injustice: Gods Among Us (2013). The game pits DC’s finest against each other when the Superman of an alternate earth kills the Joker and then establishes a unified world government called the One Earth Regime. Superman’s plan is to completely eradicate crime, by any means necessary. The story is really interesting, with a lot of emotional moments, and shows you just how terrifying it would be if DC’s greatest heroes were evil.

The game looks great. One of my favorite things is how seamless the transition is between the cut scenes and the fighting. Injustice has an impressive roster with the staple DC heroes and villains as well as a couple of cool additions such as Hawkgirl, Killer Frost, Ares, and Raven. The DLC brought Batgirl, Lobo, Martian Manhunter, Scorpion, Zatanna, and Zod to the table. Each character has a unique set of skills, with no two being exactly the same. They also have a super move, which is a special character attack that does massive damage. These are always wave over the top and quite enjoyable to watch. Aquaman, Batgirl, and Nightwing probably had my favorite super move.

Even for my button-mashing self, I got along pretty well in the campaign, as well as some of the post-game materials. There’s something called “Battle Mode” where you pick your fighter and then go up against 8 enemies. Each battle has a specific rule set, for example Heroes Only, Villains Only, Survivor, Speed Run. These were fun and a good way to test your skills with a variety of fighters.

Another part of post-game playing is S.T.A.R. Labs, which has over 240 missions spread evenly amongst your roster. The missions aren’t just one-on-one fights. One of Catwoman’s missions is to avoid lasers as you perform a heist, but the catch is you’re a cat. Trip a censor, and you’re finished. Superman has a couple of missions where timing is everything as you blast enemy robots out of the sky and save civilians. One miss-fire and it’s game over. Needless to say, these got hard and I only made it through about 40 of them. It’s a cool concept and something totally different, but I didn’t have the patience to get through them all (I tried though).

Fans of DC or fighting games will love Injustice. Since it’s an older game, it’s inexpensive to get the ultimate edition which comes with all the DLC. Definitely worth picking up and can make for a great party game.
