The Walking Dead alum Michael Cudlitz is leaving behind the zombie apocalypse and is crossing over to the world of comedy.

It was announced on Tuesday that Cudlitz has been cast in the lead role of a new untitled pilot for ABC.  The pilot will be a single-camera family comedy hailing from Last Man Standing showrunner Tim Doyle.

Written and executive produced by Doyle, the pilot is set in the 1970s and revolves around an Irish-Catholic family with a working-class dad named Mike Dwyer (Cudlitz), traditional mom and eight boisterous sons who navigate changes big and small during one of America’s most turbulent decades.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cudlitz’s character is described as “a working-class guy with 1950s conservative values who is out of his depth in the early 1970s. The father of eight relies on his church and government to cope with the student protests and discontent over the Vietnam War.”

Cudlitz is best known for his role as Abraham Ford on The Walking Dead with additional fan-favorite television credits including Officer John Cooper on Southland and Denver (Bull) Randleman on Band of Brothers.

Congratulations to Michael Cudlitz on his new role!  We can’t wait to see his comedic side shine through in this new ABC pilot!
