‘Paddington’ Director Paul King in Talks to Direct New ‘Willy Wonka’ Film

Back in 2016, it was reported that a new Willy Wonka film was in the works at Warner Bros.  Now, it appears that film is beginning to gain some momentum.

On Monday, it was announced that Paddington director Paul King is reportedly in final negotiations to helm the film as a new take on the old classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Since the project was originally announced back in 2016, few details have been revealed other than that producer David Heyman (Harry Potter, Paddington) would be involved and that Simon Rich (The Secret Life of Pets) would be writing the script.  We also know that the film will focus on Willy Wonka’s early adventures, prior to his meeting Charlie Bucket and the rest of the kids in the Wonka Factory.

The role of Willy Wonka was originally played by Gene Wilder in the 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.  The film was later remade by Tim Burton in 2005 with Johnny Depp playing Willy Wonka.  Last summer, there was speculation that Ryan Gosling may have been the front-runner for the titular role, however, there has been no confirmation on casting at this time.
