‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ and Oscar Hopefuls Had a Great Weekend at the Box Office
Despite a bumpy ride, including an on-set injury and a two-and-a-half-year break, the final installment of the Maze Runner franchise had quite a happy ending. The Death Cure ended up being the highest grossing of the weekend, bringing in an impressive $23.5 million, knocking the reigning Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle out of the top spot, which brought in $16.4 million. Even though it was the lowest opening for the trilogy (the first opened to $32.5 million and the second to $30.3 million) it was a delightful turnout for fans who have been anxiously awaiting for Thomas and The Galders’s final chapter.
A lot of moviegoers took advantage of the weekend following the Oscar nominations, creating a boost in sales for some of the Best Picture contenders. Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, which received a whopping 13 nominations, found its way back into the top 10 with its highest grossing weekend that brought in $5.7 million. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri had an 88% boost with $3.6 million and other nominees Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread each brought in just under $3 million.
The Greatest Showman continues to be a huge word of mouth hit, holding strong with $9.5 million and $126 million total and Christian Bale’s Hostiles saw a huge jump in its third weekend with $10.2 million. With the final installment of the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise and Marvel’s Black Panther on the horizon, it’s really anyone’s game in the coming weeks, but now is the perfect time to go and catch up on all of the Best Picture nominees before the show on March 4th.

Having studied Media & Writing at James Madison University, I always knew that I wanted to do some type of creative writing, but being able to write about zombies, Starks, and superheroes on a daily basis for Fan Fest is my actual dream. While I probably shouldn’t be as proud as I am to be so similar to Nick Miller, I do hope to one day write my own “Pepperwood Chronicles’.
