‘The Flash’ Recap ‘The Elongated Knight Rises’

The Flash Recap ‘The Elongated Knight Rises’

With Barry in prison, it’s up to Ralph to keep the city safe. During a hostage situation, he does a good job of getting the people to safety before facing the guy with the bomb, but Ralph puts everyone in danger when he snatches the bomb away. The man detonates it and Ralph absorbs the blast. Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, the others criticize him for his methods, saying he needs to be a bit more cautious. Ralph shrugs it off, saying he’s indestructible.

But Trickster has been broken out of Iron Heights by his mother, who used to be the villainous Prank. Trickster decides that he’s going to do whatever he can to get his father’s attention, which means defeated Ralph, who the media has dubbed “Stretchy Man.” Ralph confronts Trickster and isn’t phased by the explosives and shurikens thrown his way. But then Trickster shoots him with a mysterious acid that burns Ralph. Cisco swoops in and gets him away before Trickster can kill him. Now that Ralph realizes that he can in fact get hurt, he refuses to go after Trickster. Which is bad because Trickster and Prank have a whole bunch of hostages that they’re going to melt with acid if “Stretchy Man” doesn’t show up.

In prison, Barry is trying to be the model inmate. He pretty much keeps to himself, but accidentally catches the attention of a gang leader. The gang attacks Barry, but another inmate comes to his rescue, Big Sir. After knocking out the thugs, he tells Barry that Henry once saved his life, so he was just returning the favor. Later, the gang gets their revenge on Big Sir, but Barry interferes. He uses his speed to thwart their attacks because luckily, the camera in the room is busted. After, Big Sir thanks him and Barry has made a new friend.

Caitlin and Cisco go after Trickster and Prank while Harry tries introduces a solvent to the acid mixture. Unfortunately, it’s a trap and Caitlin and Cisco are taken hostage. Ralph takes the time to go and visit Barry in prison, asking for advice. He says that he’s scared now that he knows he can be hurt. Barry says that that’s what it means to be a hero, facing danger even when you know you might not win. Ralph takes Barry’s advice and goes to stop the villainous duo. And he gets an upgrade along the way as Cisco has finally made him a new suit. Ralph fights the pair, but Prank pulls the lever to release the acid bath. Ralph stretches over Catlain and Cisco, creating an umbrella. But it doesn’t hurt. Harry neutralized the acid just in time. The day is saved and Ralph takes the time to speak to reporters. They keep calling him Stretchy Man, but he says that’s not what his name his. He then lists all the things he can do, ending with “I elongate, man.” And it sticks. Ralph isn’t too pleased that his name is now Elongated Man, but that’s what he gets.

The final scene of the episode is Ralph and Cisco getting celebratory coffee when neither of them can pay. Suddenly, an incredibly talkative woman appears and pays for their drinks. Remember her? It’s the strange waitress from Barry and Iris’ wedding. When Ralph and Cisco leave, she starts writing in a journal and guess what, she’s writing the same symbols that Barry was in the season finale.

There wasn’t much in this episode to further the Thinker plotline besides a mention of Joe and Cecile going every piece of evidence in the case to try and find something they missed. This episode really served to establish Elongated Man and have him be the new savior of Central City, but people are gonna have to start wondering where the Flash went eventually.

The only thing that really lends itself to the main season plot is the reappearance of the waitress, who fans are theorizing is Barry and Iris’ daughter, Dawn. What she is doing in their time is a mystery and I’m interested to see where the show goes with this. She’s writing in the same symbols as Barry, so maybe at some point, she can interpret what Barry was writing when he came out of the Speed Force and figure out how to beat Thinker.

Next week’s episode is entitled ‘Honey, I Shrunk Team Flash.’
