Ridley Scott in talks to Develop a ‘Merlin’ Saga for Disney

If there is one thing that we have learned from fairy-tales it is that every King needs his Wizard. Aragon had Gandalf, Eragon had Arya and Arthur had Merlin. Even though the King is usually the one who steals the thunder, he almost always encounters a moment where he needs to call upon his wizard. So is the case of King Arthur and Merlin.

Although many people may think of the late Guy Ritchie film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, let us think back to the days past. Back when The Sword in the Stone was released (yes, I’m talking about that super cheesy yet highly entertaining cartoon). After seeing that movie as a child, I wanted to dress up like Merlin for the next two or three years. I mean, he turned into a fish, a squirrel, and he made all his household products clean up the place to the tune of a song. Well, and there is the casting spells part of it too.

My childhood dreams of a Merlin centric tale may finally becoming true, as  Variety  has recently reported that Ridley Scott may be the one to bring Merlin’s story to life.

Variety has reported that Ridley Scott is in negotiations to direct The Merlin Saga for Disney based upon the novels by T.A. Barron. Although a deal has yet to be closed, Variety’s sources state that this will likely be Ridley Scott’s next movie.

T.A. Barron’s Merlin Saga novels follow the “adventures and training of young Merlin on the mist-shrouded isle of Fincayra, an enchanted land between earth and sky that is being destroyed by blight. With this land’s inhabitants to guide him, the boy will learn that Fincayra’s fate and his own quest are strangely intertwined.”

While the news of Merlin getting his own movie is quite exciting, it’s only about to get better. Disney is also currently working on putting together a live-action adaptation of The Sword in the Stone, which Ridley Scott also met with Disney executives about last year. Philippa Boyens (The Lord of the Rings) has been brought on to write the script.
