It’s Official! ‘Game of Thrones’ Will Not Be Returning Until 2019

Did you hear that?  That was the sounds of millions of Game of Thrones fans screaming out in agony as our worst fears have come true.  HBO confirmed on Thursday that the eighth and final season of the hit series will not be gracing our television sets until 2019.

Rumors that the final season of the series might be delayed began to circulate during the summer of 2017 and interviews with the cast and showrunners for the series only seemed to support that speculation.

Filming for the eighth and final season began on schedule in October 2017, however, the production scheduled for filming was said to be quite lengthy.  Filming was reportedly set to last into the summer of 2018 which means there would be no premiere date this year for the series.

The final season of Game of Thrones will be the series’ shortest season yet with only six episodes left in order to wrap up the epic drama.  There have been reports that some episodes will be supersized, possibly even close to feature-length, which should make fans happy.  After all, there is still a lot of stories left to tell and, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have said they do not want to rush the final seasons of the series.  Benioff said:

“For a long time we’ve been talking about the wars to come.  Well, that war is pretty much here. So it’s really about trying to find a way to make the storytelling work without feeling like we’re rushing it — you still want to give characters their due, and pretty much all the characters that are now left are all important characters. Even the ones who might have started out as relatively minor characters have become significant in their own right.”
