Fox Confirms a “New Iteration” of ‘Prison Break’ is in Early Development

Just last month, Prison Break star Dominic Purcell teased fans with the possibility of a sixth season for the series.  While it’s not quite a confirmation of new season, Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn confirmed on Thursday that there is more Prison Break on the way!

Thorn made a statement at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour saying:

“We are developing a new iteration of Prison Break.  It’s very early stages of development, but we’re really excited about it.”

“A new iteration” of the series is a very vague description, however, Entertainment Weekly was able to obtain some additional information regarding Thorn’s statement.  After the press conference, EW asked Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman if a new iteration of the series meant there would be an entirely new cast.  Newman said:

“No, it would not be an entirely new cast.  It’s very early at this stage. Paul Scheuring had an idea for another season, and he came and pitched it to Michael [Thorn] and the team. They were excited about it, but it’s super early. We haven’t seen any written materials at all.”

In addition to Purcell, Prison Break stars Wentworth Miller, Sarah Wayne Callies.  The series originally went off the air in May of 2009 but was resurrected last year for a limited fifth season.  The new season had most of the original cast members returning, including Miller whose character, Michael Scofield, was believed to be dead when the show originally ended.

Back in April of this year, Miller told EW that he felt there was still a lot of stories that could be told and spoke of the possibility of the show going in “different directions.”  Perhaps this new iteration of the series is what Miller was referring to.  He previously told EW:

“I feel like there’s more story there and now we’re talking about multiple generations. There are a lot of different directions that we could go, but I’m not in favor of exploring any of that unless there’s something awesome that we can sink our teeth into.”
